There are about 9 different categories of mountain biking, whether it pertains to sport or a hobby. The categories have something for all types and levels of mountain bike rider. The 9 types of mountain biking are:
BMX
Many argue that BMX is totally different to mountain biking, due to style and bike type, however we have chosen to include it here as many mountain bike riders also enjoy riding BMX bikes. BMX bikes are commonly used at skate parks, the street and dirt jumps more so than on mountains and hills. BMX bikes have a shorter wheel base than mountain bikes and therefore are easier to perform tricks with.
Cross country
Cross country mountain bike riding involves stamina and fitness as you can be riding for a long time through difficult terrain. Cross country generally involves rocky areas as well as various levels of slopes.
Cyclo cross
A mixture of mountain biking and road biking, cyclo cross must go through rivers, over obstacles and race on and off track.
Dirt jumping
Dirt jumping when performed by mountain bike riders rather than BMX bikes is a reserved only for very experienced riders. It involves doing tricks in the air such as jumping and twisting. The jumps are generally man made from dirt and riders may jump over 5 jumps or more in one run.
Downhill
Racing downhill on a mountain bike is something exhilarating for riders. High speeds can be reached very quickly and extreme concentration and fitness is required. This has to be one of the most exciting forms of mountain biking.
Freeride
Freeriders need to find the best line down a mountain or hill. The terrain is generally rocky, slippery and dangerous to the inexperienced rider. Freeride competitions are extremely popular as riders are able to use their creativity to come out on top.
Single speed
Single speed mountain biking is riding with only one gear. The idea is simplicity with a straight chain line being able to provide very efficient pedaling. The bikes also have less components in single speed biking and as such the bike is much lighter.
Street and Urban
Riding in urban areas and on streets is highly popular and easily accessed by just about anyone. Road riding is gaining popularity as more and more major cities are building specialized bike lanes on major roads. These are just a few of the more popular types of mountain bike riding.
