If you want to get serious about mountain biking, then you'll need to get yourself some accessories. When you walk into a bike store you'll notice a wide variety of accessories. Many of these are for the very serious rider, but there are also quite a few accessories that can be useful to the casual or hobby rider too.
As is often the case, staff in a mountain bike store may try to sell you anything and everything. That's one reason I prefer to actually buy online, and use stores as a means to see the products so I can decide what I want. Most mountain bike accessories are also considerably cheaper on the internet. Let's look over some of the must-have mountain biking accessories.
Mountain Bike Shorts
Loose clothing can be hazardous when mountain biking. If you were loose shorts they can become caught up in your chain and cause you to crash. Tighter shorts, such as those worn by professional riders, are a good idea if you are riding long distances. I recommend buying actual mountain biking shorts rather than wearing your everyday clothing to ride.
Eye Protection
Another vital mountain bike accessory are sunglasses. If you don't wear glasses whilst riding then you are at risk of having dangerous particles blown into your eye. It is not uncommon for glasses-less mountain bikers to be rushed to a doctor with glass, dirt or other potentially blinding debris in their eye. You can avoid this by buying a good quality pair of sunglasses. You should ensure they are well made and preferably come with a strap to keep them on your head. If you wear prescription glasses then you can speak to your optometrist about prescription sunglasses.
Mountain Bike Repair Kit
If you are riding for a considerable amount of time, then taking a basic bike repair kit with you is a wise idea. You can carry it in a small backpack or attached to your bike. You should at the very least bring a tire repair kit, tire levers and a mountain bike multi-tool. Don't go cheap on mountain bike accessories because they are there to protect you and you could be very well thankful that you spent that extra money.
